William Ramsay and Morris Travers isolate a new gas in London and see a brilliant red glow when current passes through it.
Neon goes public
Georges Claude lights the Grand Palais at the Paris Motor Show with two red neon tubes, each 12 metres long.
The first great sign
A vast Cinzano vermouth sign lights the Paris night sky. By 1919 neon frames the entrance to the Paris Opera.
Neon reaches America
Claude Neon sells two “Packard” signs to a Los Angeles car dealer — $1,250 each. Crowds reportedly stopped to stare.

In three years LED overtakes neon in illuminated signage — neon falls from 33% to 18%, LED climbs from 23% to 40%.
